Be specific about what feels different.

Heating concerns are easier to discuss when you describe the experience rather than name a suspected fault. Say whether the issue affects the whole home or just certain rooms. Mention whether it is a new concern, a recurring pattern, or something you noticed when you first used the heating.

Useful observations include the temperature you expected, what the controls display, and any change in the usual operating pattern. These details are not a diagnosis. They give the person answering the phone a clearer picture of your question.

Prepare without taking equipment apart.

  • Your system description. Share the type of heating equipment if you already know it, or use the wording on existing service paperwork.
  • The affected rooms. Explain whether comfort has changed in one area or across the property.
  • The pattern. Note whether the concern is continuous, occasional, or linked to a particular setting.
  • Your address and access. Have the property location and any appointment arrangements ready to discuss.

You do not need to open panels, test electrical parts, or adjust fuel components to prepare for a call. If you are a tenant, discuss repair authorization with your property manager first.

Questions worth asking on the phone.

Ask whether your heating equipment is within the scope of a visit and whether your address can be accommodated. Discuss scheduling, the initial assessment, and how any visit charges would be explained. Before agreeing to work, ask how proposed repairs and their costs will be presented.

If your heating and cooling share equipment, mention whether you have also noticed a cooling concern. If the issue is hot water at a tap rather than room temperature, the water-heater page is the more useful place to begin.

Suspect a natural gas leak?

Leave the area immediately. From a safe location, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200. Call 911 if life or property is in danger or you cannot reach SoCalGas. Do not use flames, operate electrical switches, or attempt to repair the leak.

Before you make the call.

Is space heating the same as water heating?

This page concerns warmth in the rooms of your home. If the issue is the hot water you use at a sink or shower, read the water-heater repair guidance and describe that concern when you call.

What if I do not know the fuel or equipment type?

Explain what you know and ask what details would help. Existing documents may identify the equipment. There is no need to inspect fuel lines or open the unit to begin a conversation.

Can I ask about a recurring concern?

Yes—describe how often it happens and any previous work noted in your service records. Ask what information would be useful for an assessment rather than assuming that the previous issue has returned.
